Mindy kept saying, "Come on Mom, come try Zumba!!" There are times I can chew bubble gum and walk a fairly straight line, but not always, have never been accused of being too coordinated and for the past 10 yrs they have completely denied my application for "So who told you You could dance?" Along came Debbie Critchfields Zumbathon and I went to watch. Then a couple of weeks later I went with Mindy to a class, then another and another and I am hooked. Even if I am"old". I have had back trouble for many yrs with herniated discs, worn a body cast from my sternum to my hips 3 times to help heal the discs, I have bunions that would stop a train, a bladder that doesn't like to even set down hard in a chair let alone jump from one spot to another. But now? My ankles have gotten stronger and are able to support my feet better. People with bunions have horrible balance because it throws you off center. And my bunions appear smaller at least when I am setting which really is something and they don't hurt as much. My back hardly ever hurts anymore and I haven't worn my Swift back support for over a yr. And my heart? Well let's just say I am learning that after putting the new wing on Cassia Regional with all of my ER visits, that I think it really is going to keep on beating until I die. Some days are really crummy, but the great thing is that they are fewer and further apart. I maintain my balance soooo much better during Zumba class and I feel steadier on my feet. I have muscles that have been on their own little vacation for years showing up to work. And I can make it through Zumba without tinkling in my britches!! Yeah me!!! I told Mindy it is great BBB toning. Butt, Bunions and Bladder. ( I know TMI, but you did ask!! )
My Cardiologist in Boise is thrilled. She says that due to the fact that I can actually make it through an hour of Zumba now without stopping just proves that the integrity of my heart is better. She is very happy that I am strengthening the heart muscle as well.
I also have lots more stamina.

It's very easy for me to tell you what Zumba, Zumba toning and Aqua Zumba have done for me personally. The only exercise programs I have done have been in my own living room with DVD's, VHS or whatever I may find on TV and lots of gardening and hard work. I have to admit that Leslie Samsone and "Walk Away the Pounds" really did inspire me to do better. And I have always been a walker. But it got very boring. The past 10 years I haven't done much of anything except gain weight and feel discouraged because I really couldn't exercise without chest pain, pain down my left arm and up my neck. Needless to say it can be a little unnerving no matter how many times you are told that the tests they run are normal and it probably won't kill you. When it hurts bad enough to put me on the couch, I get a little antsy about it. I have never been a person that was able to do "still" very well. I am always doing something, even when watching a movie I am crocheting, reading the paper or a book. I drive my family crazy. The pain actually started many years ago in my 20's but just got to the point where it was very uncomfortable. I have Heart Arrhythmia's and after many, many tests, the Dr.s I have gone to have not really determined why, just that it probably will not ever kill me, but won't go away either. I am allergic to the "ideal" drug for it. About a yr and a half ago, I started on some other medication that has totally changed my life. It really helped with the palpitations and the pain. I lost over 35 lbs last yr. and have been able to maintain most of that.

My first impression of Zumba was just a curiosity, but I had no desire, strength or will power to act on it. In fact, the more people talked about it, the more tuned out and irritated I became. After weeks of pleading from people I felt comfortable with, to try it “just once”, I did. It was so hard for me. I thought that hour would never end. It was a real workout. Especially for me, I was so out of shape and had no real will power to continue. I was so sore and so sweaty (by the way, I hate to sweat), and some of the footwork was a little tricky for me (by the way, I’m not much of a dancer either). On the flip side, IT WAS SO FUN!! The music was fun, the people and instructors were helpful and very encouraging. Surprisingly, I did not feel self- conscience at all. I was among friends that wanted to help and have a great time. Soon I was familiar with the songs and the moves which made it even more fun for me.I have been involved in Zumba for almost a year now. I have tried to be very diligent at attending as many classes as my life will allow. I love it. It really has made some changes with my body (still a long way to go), my attitude, and my life. Find a friend, bring some water and come join the fun!!!
